AUSTINTOWN LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ACADEMIC POLICIES

The Board recognizes the value of a program of extracurricular activities for students in grades 7-12 as an integral part of the total school experience for the students of the district and for the community.  However, student participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege, not a right.

For the purpose of this policy "Extracurricular Activities" refers to a pupil activity program that a school or the district sponsors, and is under the supervision of a coach/ advisor and/ or director.  "Extracurricular Activities" do not include activities in the district's graded courses of study. However, band and choir students not meeting these established standards will be excluded from all non-graded/ non-credit related activities of the organization during the ensuing grade period.

As a condition for the privilege of participating in extracurricular activities, a student must have attained a minimum grade point average of 1.5 and received no more than one failing grade for any course in the district's graded course of study in the previous grade period.  This standard will be effective with grades earned during the first grade period of the 2000-2001 school year.

In addition, students participating in any program regulated by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) must also comply with eligibility regulations and bylaws established by the Association.   OHSAA academic eligibility requirements include:

Grades
9 through 12:
"The student athlete must be currently enrolled in school and have received passing grades in a minimum of five (5) one credit courses, or the equivalent, in the immediately preceding grading period."  (Note: A physical education class does not count as one of the five courses).
Grades
7 through 8:
"The student athlete must be currently enrolled in school and have received passing grades in at least 75 percent of the subjects in which enrolled in the immediately preceding grading period."

** Please note that semester grades, yearlong final grades, and summer school
grades are not considered in determining a student's eligibility.

If a student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP) indicates that an exemption from this policy would be appropriate, such eligibility requirements shall be adjusted accordingly for the student. However, the OHSAA mandates may not be exempted by an IEP.

EXAMPLES OF HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY / INELIGIBILITY

Athletic Eligibility for athletes is determined from the preceding nine-week grading period. Semester average and yearly average have no effect on eligibility. Please consult the Ohio High School Athletic Association's eligibility pamphlet for further details. The Austintown Local Schools comply with state athletics. Students must maintain at least a 1.5 grade point average, pass five classes, in addition to physical education, and not fail more than one class.

* For purposes of determining Athletic eligibility, a course is assumed to be for the "entire year".  Therefore, a semester course worth 1/2 credit (academically) carries a "value" of 1 credit (athletically). All of the above examples illustrate Athletic credits.
